Spinning Process
Draw and spin :
Left hand: gently draw yarn to arm’s length.
Right hand: turn the wheel clockwise continuously.
Keep drafting loose and controlled to prevent over-twisting.
Joining Yarn :
Hold cotton sliver in left hand, palm up.
Extend about 1 ft of sliver from spindle.
Turn the wheel to join fibres and form a continuous strand.
Winding Yarn :
Turn the wheel counter-clockwise to remove yarn from spindle tip.
Then turn clockwise to wind lightly onto the spindle.
Wind loosely down to the whorl and return hand to drafting position.
Setting The Charkha
1. Drive Belt & Accelerator :
• Loop the belt around the small wheel (bottom) and big wheel (outer edge).
• Mount both wheels on their posts and ensure smooth movement.
2. Spindle Setup :
• Lift the spindle holder (spindles should be to your left).
• Use the heavy cotton cords as bearings.
• Insert the spindle: leather disk first, then silver yarn holder.
• Thin string belt goes around small wheel and spindle whorl.
• Set spindle into bearings; release holder to fix it in place.
3. Final Adjustment :
• Adjust the leather disk and stopper so they almost touch the spindle stand.
MAINTENANCE : KEEP OILING THE PART OF THE WHEEL THAT ROTATES WITH THE IRON FOR A SMOOTH FUNCTIONING. KEEP THE PETI CHARKHA BOX IN A DRY SPACE.
